#53 - Alternate Spike SC Mosaic Crochet technique
Here's another fascinating reversible mosaic crochet technique for you! Learn to work the Spike SC Stitch in this reversible style of Mosaic Crochet. With this style of Spike SC Mosaic Crochet, one side is predominantly light-colored and the other side is predominantly dark-colored. This technique can be worked in my COM technique, carrying the yarn across from the end of the row to the beginning of the next row, eliminating the ends (I demonstrate using this technique in the video). Or it can be worked in the traditional style of Mosaic Crochet with starting and ending each row, leaving tails at both ends of each row (to cover with a double border, weave in or turn into fringe).

Can a beginner do this
That's an excellent question, Marcia! If you're an adventurous beginner and you learn well from videos, you CAN do this! I would suggest starting with learning to do Overlay Mosaic Crochet with my video #21 here: ua-cam.com/video/mlLXMG7qOd8/v-deo.html. You can practice the technique with the free swatch download from my website (the link is in that video description). Then you can move on to learning my Anchored double crochet stitch (Adc) in video #18 here: ua-cam.com/video/UfRvfdCPeFE/v-deo.html and my COM technique in this video (#25) to use with your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects. But it's best to learn and practice the Overlay Mosaic Crochet technique first before adding the special stitch (Adc) and technique (COM) to improve your Overlay Mosaic Crochet. Happy crocheting to you now and always!
hi I bought this pattern of the blancket in your site (even my english is not perfect) and i want to know about size if i want make it bigger what should i do .
Hi Silvia. Thank you for your pattern purchase through my Etsy shop. I'll reply to you privately through your messages on Etsy.
Could you please tell us if i m going to make a blanket .. if i need put 12x6, or 16x6 or 14x 6 etc... and the more for begin and end.. please
I don't understand your question, Silvia. Each pattern will have a different stitch and row multiple. Is there a specific pattern you're referring to?
Thank you!!!!
You're very welcome, Dianna! Have you also watched my COM video to reduce the number of ends to weave in on your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects? It's video #25. I hope you enjoy using my Anchored double crochet stitch on your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects! Happy crocheting to you now and always!
Hi again, how do I do if i want make a blanket ? how to repeat?what part i repeat what part is the begin and the end? my difficult is repeat for a blanket of scarf or something else... its hard to understand what part repeat and what part is the begin and the end. Could you explain to me please?thank you very very much
Silvia, What stitches and rows to repeat depends on the pattern or design. Some patterns have a very short repeat of only 4-8 stitches/rows and others have a long repeat of over 20 stitches/rows (and some patterns have no repeat). My Mosaic Crochet patterns have written instructions and a chart to follow. The written patterns and charts include which stitches and rows are repeated (except for small projects like hot pads). The Chain Links Scarf pattern that I show at the beginning of this video includes how to make the scarf longer, shorter, wider or narrower by working more or less repeats in width and height. I'm sorry that I didn't show what to repeat in this video. I was just demonstrating the technique for this Alternate Spike SC Mosaic Crochet technique. In most of my mosaic crochet videos, I'm demonstrating the technique. In many of them, I include a free download for the swatch chart to practice the technique (the free chart download is available on my website with the link to the free download in the video description). In 2 of my mosaic crochet videos (#39: Spike DC and #45: Spike SC), the free chart download includes which rows and stitches are repeated to make into a project. I hope this information helps. Happy crocheting to you!
Hi, please do you have free download of this or another mosaic crochet??thank you very very much
Hi Silvia. Welcome to my UA-cam channel. I have 6 free downloads for various mosaic crochet techniques on my website here: thecrochetarchitect.com/patterns/free-patterns/. All of these downloads are for swatches (practice pieces), not finished projects. But you can learn the various mosaic crochet techniques by working these swatches and watching each video associated with each swatch. Here's the full playlist of my mosaic crochet videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLvrXmMW8WECMkWvZj85aGmtdWVpp3nRrO.html. Happy mosaic crocheting to you!
Ya … no … super waste … also makes it so heavy and to thick
I like the added strength (thickness) of the afghans I've made using my COM technique. Also, I find it uses less yarn and take less time than making a double border. But I realize it's not for everyone. Do you make a double border or weave in all those ends (or work over them)? Or do you only make inset mosaic crochet projects (with 2 rows of each color) that don't have 2 ends/tails per row? Happy crocheting to you!
the way I JUST finished the body of a really complicated mosaic crochet blanket.... its the first time ive ever done this technique and this video popped up in auto play. AS I SIT HERE WORKING THE DOUBLE BOARDER HATING EVERY MIINUTE OF IT lol
I feel your pain! I'm sorry that you didn't find my video sooner. But now that you've learned my COM technique (with the use of the anchored double crochet stitch), you can use it on all the other overlay mosaic crochet blankets that you make from here on out! I've never done a double border and I don't plan to ever do one! When you're doing my COM technique, make sure you adjust the carried yarn each time you start a row so it isn't too tight or too loose (NOT being too tight is the most important thing). That's the only time you can adjust the carried yarn. Once you've started that row, you can't adjust it any more. Happy COM crocheting to you!
Thanks so much for the great tutorial. I'm going to check out more from your channel 😊.
You're very welcome! I hope you enjoy learning more crochet techniques, stitches, patterns and tips from my videos. Happy crocheting to you!
Thank you
You're very welcome, Neelam! I hope you enjoy using my COM technique for many of your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects. Happy crocheting to you!
Great tutorial!!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy crocheting many of these bowl cozies! Happy crocheting to you!
I am just starting my interest in overlay mosaic crochet. I was wondering.. if you did a slip stitch in the stitch behind the overlay to capture the yarn, then did a regular dc instead of the anchored dc, would that work? I would have to try it.
I'm not sure if that would work because you'd basically be adding a stitch. So your piece would get wider and you probably don't want to add stitches, depending on the project. Have you watched my Anchored dc video? Here's the link to that one: ua-cam.com/video/UfRvfdCPeFE/v-deo.html. Please let me know if it works after you try it. Happy mosaic crocheting to you!
Genius 😊 thank you
You're very welcome, CeCe! I hope you enjoy crocheting some reversible Inset Mosaic Crochet projects very soon! Happy crocheting to you!
Susan can I do double crochet in the beginning to make bowl cozy from Collingwood Ontario Canada
Great question, Nancy! I suppose you could do the first few rounds in dc instead of sc. It may make the bowl cozy a little too loose and have holes between the stitches, though. You could always give it a try to see how it works. If it doesn't work out, just rip it out and do it differently! Happy crocheting to you!
I always come back to this video when I want to remember the best way to do a mosaic crochet ❤ thank you so much!
You're very welcome, Hayden! I hope all your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects turn out fabulous! Happy crocheting to you!
Great teacher. Very clear and great up close view to make it easier to see. Thank you. Love the pattern.😊
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the video and the pattern. Happy crocheting to you now and always!
You're an amazing teacher!
Thank you! I enjoy teaching when I have the time. Happy crocheting!
I like the inset one!
Inset Mosaic Crochet is a little easier than Overlay Mosaic Crochet because of less ends. It's nice that there are options for everyone! Happy crocheting to you!
Can I use an 80% cotton yarn for potholders?
Great question! It depends what the 20% fiber is. If it's polyester or acrylic, don't use it. Polyester and acrylic both melt when they get hot. If the other 20% is an animal (wool, alpaca, etc) or plant (hemp, linen, etc) fiber, it should be okay. You can always make a small test piece to make sure before crocheting the whole potholder. Happy crocheting to you!
Hi! I made my first potholder from your video! I would like to ask, what do I do now that it is done? Do I need to block it, steam it, or wash it first if I want to give them as gifts for Xmas? I used Lily Sugar and Cream yarn.
Hi Anne! I'm so glad you were able to make your first thermal stitch potholder from my video! Sometimes I block my potholders before use or giving as a gift, depending on how it looks. If your potholder looks even and lays flat, you don't need to block it. However, if you think it could use a blocking to make it look more even and square, go ahead and block it. My go-to for blocking is wet blocking, which is great for cotton yarn, such as the Sugar and Cream yarn you used. However, be aware that it will take a day or two to dry because of the thickness of the thermal stitch. You may even have to turn it over to get the bottom side to dry fully. I hope this helps! I hope you enjoy crocheting many of these thermal stitch potholders as Christmas gifts! They seem to be a big hit with everyone I've given them to as gifts (who doesn't need more thick, usable potholders, since many of them get old and ugly after time?)! Happy crocheting to you!
Is it possible/easy to convert a filet crochet pattern to an overlay crochet pattern?
I think you could probably convert a filet crochet pattern to overlay mosaic crochet. You could work the solid filet squares as the drop down dc stitches in the light color and the open filet squares as just sc peeking out between the light dc surrounding it with 2 mosaic crochet rows (one dark and one light) for each row in the filet crochet chart/pattern. OR you could work 4 mosaic crochet rows (1 dark, 1 light, 1 dark and 1 light) for each row in the filet crochet chart/pattern (with the 2nd row of the dark color as drop down dc to give more of a substantial open space from the filet crochet chart/pattern). This sounds like a fascinating possibility that I'm going to have to explore in the coming days/weeks/months! Happy crocheting to you, Alissa!
thank you. A year ago, I would not have been interested. BUT now...holy cow, you have made a difference. I was looking for something like this for a baby blanket and just in time also.. it is due in less than 3 weeks. A colorwork without the weave in ends....thank you for your creative spirit.
You're very welcome, Eva! I hope your baby blanket project turns out fabulous! Happy crocheting to you now and always!
I have made about 200 to 300 of these bowls. I sell & give away. I also use scrap yarn as my marker.
I'm so glad that you're able to make so many microwave bowl cozies to sell and give away, Beulah! I agree about the scrap yarn marker. It works so much better and faster than an actual stitch marker! Happy bowl cozy crocheting to you!
I love the outakes. Thanks for the video tutorial.
You're very welcome, Anne! I make lots of mistakes while filming the crochet videos and my husband enjoys adding the outtakes/bloopers (he's even in some of them, but as funny sketches instead of outtakes)! I hope you enjoy crocheting many of these potholders. Happy crocheting to you!
Can mosaic be turned into c2c
I don't think mosaic can be turned into c2c, Margie.
Absolutely enlightening 😮
I'm glad you liked it! Happy crocheting to you!
Great video. I've been learning some mosaic, and I thought it silly to have all the ends. I experimented with just going back and forth and didn't understand what was 'wrong' with it. But now I see it's just the wrong side of stitches being visible. I'm new enough to crochet that I wouldn't have noticed!
Thanks, Tyler! Crocheting backwards isn't done very often, but it's a great technique to have in your wheelhouse! Have you watched my COM (Continuous Overlay Mosaic) video #25 for another way to eliminate all those ends in Overlay Mosaic Crochet? Here's the link to that video, if you'd like to learn something else to help with your mosaic crochet projects: ua-cam.com/video/fgdFlkafsdo/v-deo.html. Happy crocheting to you!
You are ingenious. I love this technique.
Thank you! I'm glad you like this technique. Happy crocheting to you!
Great , to the point video, great and usable item to make and share. Thanks
You're very welcome, Joann! I hope you enjoy crocheting many of these potholders to use and give as gifts! Happy crocheting to you now and always!
Wow that is just a stellar idea. I want to learn the mosaic patterns too. I think it is rich in texture and those ends don't even show if the alignment is done like you showed. Bravo for sharing extra yarn is worth the cost not to have to deal with all those ends! thank you so much for figuring it out for all of us crochet'ers. You are a Yarn send.
You're very welcome, Maxine! I'm glad you like my COM technique and I hope you thoroughly enjoy learning mosaic crochet! Happy crocheting to you now and always!
Seems a bit wasteful.
I actually find it saves yarn (and time) over working a double border. But if you're working on a project that won't need a double border, then it would use some extra yarn. If the rows you're working are narrow, then the carried yarn might be shorter than leaving 2 tails/ends. Happy crocheting to you!
Did you sew also? You have such a talent.
Thank you, Teri! I do a little sewing here and there, but mostly crochet.
What a kind person you are and so so smart 💯
Thank you for your kind words, Teri! Happy crocheting to you now and always!

This is making my brain hurt trying to figure this out haha. Love the tutorial. I'm going to keep trying ❤
I'm glad you love this tutorial. I'm sorry for making your brain hurt, though! I hope you enjoy trying this out and you're successful with it! Happy crocheting to you!
I love you channel. It’s really informative and has helped me in my crochet journey. Hope you continue to post regularly 😊
Thank you for your kind words. I enjoy making videos when my husband and I have the time. We're retired and there are lots of other things that keep us busy (like travel, grandkids, home projects and home renovation). I have lots of plans for more videos, but not as much extra time as my plans! Isn't that the way with life? More ideas than time! Happy crocheting!
To make a larger bowl cozy, you can add more increase rounds at the end of the first section with the 8 increases evenly spaced to make it wider. You can also add more increase rounds in the second section with the 4 increases evenly spaced to make it taller. If you add more increase rounds in the first section, you'll need to work more sc between the increases in the corners in the second section, of course.
How could you change the pattern to make the bowl hugger fit larger bowls.
Great question, Noelle. You can add more increase rounds at the end of the first section with the 8 increases evenly spaced to make it wider. You can also add more increase rounds in the second section with the 4 increases evenly spaced to make it taller. If you add more increase rounds in the first section, you'll need to work more sc between the increases in the corners in the second section, of course. Happy crocheting to you!
Love your videos! You are such a great teacher! Do you have any videos or patterns on making any of these designs into a hat? For instance do you have any thermal patterns or mosaic patterns that could be incorporated into a hat? Thanks so much!
Thank you so much, Heather! I enjoy teaching and designing! Unfortunately, I don't have any videos or patterns for making any thermal stitch or mosaic patterns into a hat. I just did a quick search on UA-cam and MJ's Off the Hook Designs has several videos for making mosaic crochet hats. They look absolutely fabulous! Here's one of her hat videos: ua-cam.com/video/P5O21QW6H44/v-deo.html. Happy crocheting to you now and always!

You're very welcome! Thank you for your kind words! Happy crocheting to you!
super helpful thank you SO much!!
You're very welcome! Happy Tapestry Crocheting to you!
Do you always have tails on each row with tapestry stitching?
With this style of Tapestry Crochet, you'll have tails on each row. However, you can work Tapestry Crochet in turned rows, as well (one right-side row, followed by one wrong-side rows). I made a video for this style of Tapestry Crochet. You can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/BlJf_p3ek58/v-deo.html. You can also work the wrong-side rows with backwards stitches so all the stitches face the right side. That video is here: ua-cam.com/video/wF8zdIem0Es/v-deo.html. Happy Tapestry Crocheting to you Sandy!
Funnily enough I have always done this technique
You make much taller stitches than me (and possibly the average crocheter). I have to force myself to make taller stitches, when needed to get row gauge (or when crocheting rounds for motifs). I suppose since I do thread crochet often, I have more of a naturally tight gauge rather than loose gauge. Happy crocheting to you!
Do you have a video on converting a normal overlay mosaic pattern to a reversible pattern?
Hi Jesse. I don't have a video to convert a normal overlay mosaic crochet pattern to a reversible pattern. However, you can work a normal overlay mosaic crochet pattern with the spike sc technique and it will become a reversible pattern. You can do this with any normal overlay mosaic crochet pattern. Here's my video for the spike sc mosaic crochet technique: ua-cam.com/video/Inx7Qjd2Gtw/v-deo.html. You don't need to do anything to the pattern, just work a spike sc wherever a drop down dc is worked in the pattern instead. You can use my COM technique, as well, or begin and end every row, encasing the edges in a double border. Happy crocheting to you!
👏🏻👏🏻🤩💯🏆🎶💕😍🎵🎉 Amazing technique! Fantastic tutorial video!! Awesome teacher!!! Thank you so very much!!!!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you like the video and technique! Happy crocheting to you!
